ARTISTS STATEMENT
My work in both objects and site installations has focused on the use of non-art materials as the conduit for the content. Word and image share equal importance and the material acts as a metaphor to reinforce the meaning.
Word play and the examination of language in all its richness are the genesis for the work. The source material ranges from such diverse references as the Bible, the Thesaurus and Shakespeare, to the evocative names for cosmetic colors. The work examines how language describes, organizes, and categorizes things. These primary functions of language and their linkage to the object is what I explore and amplify in my work

versus freedom, submission versus rebellion. Her work shivers with an anguished

Her
art fascinates us because of its unsettling character, its intelligence and
by its use of feminine references. The condition of a woman, her body and
her circumstances constitute a partial viewpoint in her work...it is always
broached with extreme objectivity. At the same time, her sense of humor, her
effusive vitality, appears to conflict with what one might perceive as the
peculiar meek property of the fragile sex.

"Metaphors,
fantasies and similes comprise the sexual, political and aesthetic statements
by Mary Dritschel. (She) evidences a knowledge and control of craft and a
fine sensitivity to shape and materials."
-- Hedy OBeil,
