The Eye of the Goddess is one of a number of installations created during my stay as a Fulbright Scholar in Porto Alegre, Brazil. It consists of seed pods used by the native “Gaucho” to hold an herbal tea made from local grasses. Sipping this tea is a cultural ritual and passion practiced by nearly everyone. The pods rest on 33 porcelain plates on whose surface is written the name of a different ancient goddess. Each plate sits on a lace paper place mat which are then arranged to make the form a triangle. From each pod a white satin ribbon emerges to meet its neighbor in the center of the triangle to form a canopy.
